Meh, I feel like I'm being terribly uncommunicative lately. Lots of big and little craziness!stuff that adds up, not so much to an actual total lack of time to do things as to  general distractedness and inability to focus on anything. So much writing I want to get done, both my own and in comments, and yet... *so much fail*

But yeah, lots going on, even setting aside last-minute Christmas preparations! Among other things, the masons came to tear out the whole stone front of our fireplace, which has caused a fair amount of chaos...

And of far more interest, and the best possible chaos - I have a brand new great niece! Baby Elle arrived last night! *so excited* There were a fair amount of complications during the labor, which was the cause for some anxiety, but both momma and baby are safe and healthy now, if quite exhausted. And Elle is adorable. Not that I'm at all biased. ;D

And Lexie is, naturally, continuing to be an adorable little princess herself as well. She's missed her mother terribly, and so when she arrived she cuddled up next to Ashley and just repeated "Mommy, Mommy, Mommy, Mommy..." over and over in the happiest tone of voice - not wanting anything, just so happy to be with her again. So. Cute.

Just a couple pictures (yes, I shall resist the urge to spam y'all with them ^.^) -

Baby! )

(Why yes, we did spend quite a bit of time at the hospital today. There aren't that many good, fun reasons to visit a hospital, but boy, when they're good they're really good. *g*)

So yeah, even when I've had time on my hands it seems like I've had the worst time actually getting anything done. Yes, in a couple days the holiday craziness with be settled and it'll likely be much easier, but still. *feels bad*

Heh, as so often seems to happen, though, when I'm having trouble focusing either because of sickness or busyness, the one thing I can easily do is art. And as Nef's got me started on a little art spree (literally as well as figuratively)... A few things I've done.
Leetle art-ish stuffs. )
imbecamiel: (Griffin)
My dad walks inside: "Hey, guess what! I found a Griffin's jawbone!"

Me: *blink* "What?"

Dad: *shows me a partial jawbone of... something, missing most of the teeth*

Me: "Griffins have beaks. They don't have any teeth."

Eric: "Told you she wouldn't fall for it."

XD

My family's so crazy. And I love my dad for even thinking of that joke.

After having a cold for a week you're supposed to be feeling better, not worse, right? Just checking.

When something leaves Eric needing naps, and my dad takes two days off work after catching it (aside from when he had surgery, I can remember him doing that... twice, maybe three times?), you know it's nasty.

My brain is so dead. Yesterday at piano lessons I could not remember the order of flats. I've been taking lessons for fifteen years. This is pathetic. And today when Mom asked me how I was feeling? I told her, "Um... better than I did tomorrow." Uhuh. Riiiight. :P

So yeah, I keep having things I want to post or respond to, but I just wind up staring blankly instead. Bleh.
imbecamiel: (Default)
Guess what! I'm a red-with-brown belt in karate now! *so bouncy* Nef wasn't feeling real well, so she didn't test this time, which is sad... but she's not particularly bothered, because now Eric and I both have to do harder stuff in class than she does. XD

As far as other stuff going on...

Made squirrel for dinner the other day. The guys have been shooting them lately, and decided that we really ought to try eating them. Eh... not something I think I'd do again. Not that it tasted bad - in fact, it was quite good - but, well.

You must realize, I am not particularly squeamish when it comes to meat - either the preparing, or the eating. I've tried some pretty odd things, just for the sake of having eaten it at least once. I frequently deal with various kinds of meat in the kitchen, of course, and I have helped butcher a deer, I clean fish (and bait my own hooks, take the fish off the hooks, and cook them, naturally, started learning all that when I was about five), and none of these things bother me. I also favor the idea that if you're going to kill an animal, it's good to eat it when possible rather than wasting it.

I don't know, maybe it's the fact that they were squirrels. Squirrels are cute. I like them. (Deer are beautiful, and I like them too, but squirrels are cute and little. I rather lost my appetite for that reason eating quail, even though I liked it - all I could picture was my parakeet... :P) Squirrels are also pests, yes, and these were trouble-makers that needed to be got rid of. Still.

Might've also been the fact that, while I was preparing them, I was extremely hungry. That, combined with spending so much time trying to get the fur off the meat, and then the smell of it cooking - just enough "normal food, and yet... not" - was enough to make me start feeling sick. Somehow, the smell of that meat, just...

Might've also had something to do with the fact that my brother tends to process things by talking. A lot. And therefore felt the need to go over the killing and gutting process in great detail, regardless of whether we might be eating at the time (difference in appearance between blood and brain matter on snow, versus ground, smells involved... yeah, maybe interesting for writing research purposes, but now?).

The fact that my piece of meat still had some pieces of hair on it might also have contributed. I maintain that Eric was the one who cleaned that one. :P

So yeah. Not real interested in trying squirrel again. I'm glad I did once... sort of. But if Dad and Eric want to do it again, I think the meat's gonna be done with barbecue sauce for a guys-only night. Heh.

On a completely different track - yay, such pretty new eggs out at dragon cave! And for the first time, I actually knew from the start what two of them were going to be. *has so much insider knowledge* He, yeah, or not - but I was following their progress and they were finished quite recently - which gives me hope that it may not be so very long before one of my concepts has a chance of making it. ^.^ So -

Adopt one today!Adopt one today!Adopt one today!Adopt one today!Adopt one today!Adopt one today!

And along those lines...

Bit of an art update. )
imbecamiel: (Squee)
Soo, karate promotions went considerably better than I'd expected, all things considered. Except for the fact that the toes on one of my feet were doing the whole random-going-numb thing again the whole time. Doesn't really help with balance and all. :P But! While I didn't get my next belt, I'm almost certain to next time (I was told I had just a couple of things to polish up, get the details perfect), and I did get another stripe. As I said - better than I'd been expecting, with the less than ideal circumstances this time.

And after testing had a very fun conversation with my favorite teacher, who commiserated with us on the fact that Eric his next belt, is therefore slightly ahead of us now, and will likely prove impossible to live with. *g* Found out she likes NCIS, and Dad gave her official permission to Gibbs-slap Eric whenever she pleases. 'Cause sometimes he needs it. ;) (He just... sometimes likes to press his luck a bit with the teachers we know well, hoping they'll be harder on him in consequence.Yeah, he's literally asking for it, and they know it.)

Speaking of NCIS... anyone else read this? *EPICsquee* Seriously, in all the speculation and discussion I've participated in over the 150th episode, it sounds like it may prove exactly, exactly the sort of storyline I'd been hoping for. Just - *flails in fannish glee* Okay, I now have major excitement, and even higher hopes for this episode. If only January 12th weren't so far away... *wistful sigh* Still slightly nervous over what the resolution will be like, but ooooh, I've a feeling this one's gonna be awesome.

Yay! :D
imbecamiel: (Monstrous Intolerable Revolution)
Whether they're likely to make it to the full 50,000 by the end of the month or not, I have been just so impressed by what my friends who're working on NaNo have been accomplishing. *cheers y'all on* (Seriously, [livejournal.com profile] cairistiona7, almost there already, and it's only the 18th?! *iz ded of awe*) This morning I was thinking about it, and you know what I realized?

My sister has been doing NaNo. By accident.

Yeah, really. Shortly after we went to a writing conference on Halloween, she was struck by inspiration, wrote a several-thousand-word fanfic, then started in on a longer related piece, and has been basically writing two or three thousand words every day. (And this is good stuff. I've been editing as she goes along, and she's just nailing what she wants to accomplish here.) It's not improbable that she will have the story finished by the end of the month, and if the final word count is over 50,000 (probable)... she will have done NaNo. Without trying to. Oh, not that writing this hasn't been work for her, but... srsly. o.o

Me, on the other hand? My nickname ought to be The Turtle, because even when I'm inspired I am slooow. *g* I shall be very lucky if my word count for the month makes it to 10,000. But at least I'm writing and having fun? And Teh Crossover of Epic Weirdness (aka "currently nameless NCIS/Temeraire story") is still going well? And I'm hoping to make it to at least 7,000 words by the end of the month? Aaaand, while doing research the other day to have a better basis for one of my ideas, I came across something else really cool that may make it even more fun. (Spiders, yay!) So I'm accomplished too, in my own small, strange way.

:D
imbecamiel: (Be yourself)
Snowed almost all day. The internet kept cutting out. Worked on lots of editing. Dad and Eric accidentally lit the dryer on fire. Then they went out to cut down a dead tree. It fell the opposite direction from what they'd been expecting, and got caught on two other trees. So they cut those trees down too. Except they got caught on another tree...

You know. That kind of ordinary mid-October day.

I'm gonna go make some hot chocolate and get someone to light me a fire. In the fireplace. :)

Hehe.

I just have to say - I love my family.

This morning, our brother came down to wake us up and let us know there were pancakes ready. (Mr. Morning Person, who loves making big breakfasts...) Neffie told him she was too tired to get up, he'd have to carry her upstairs. So... he did. Little brother's not so little anymore. :)

*is so amused*
imbecamiel: (Hobbit)
My birthday was indeed quite wonderful. :) Lovely time with church family in the morning, and an all-around enjoyable, peaceful day. And I now have some lovely new reading material - including a copy of The Thief with a little extra section that the library version didn't have. And the most perfect, tiny MP3 player! (Which my sweet, tech-savvy little brother got completely set up for me, with all of my music on it, as well as giving me a run-down of how everything works.) And the Iron Man DVD. Yes, I am turning into far more of a superhero fan than I'd ever expected. Sometimes, my levels of geekiness surprise even me. *g* And Neffie made me an awesome cake - a brownie/chocolate cake thing, with a chocolate cheesecake layer on top, and a chocolate glaze on top of that. She knows me well. :D

My family is so wonderful. *hugs them all*

And in a typical quite random change of subject...

NCIS fanficcy ramblings - i.e. talking myself out of a bad idea, since doing it in my head's not effective enough. )

imbecamiel: (Ziva Hee)

Okay, so I was going to do this Saturday, actually, but... I... didn't. Obviously. Because she distracted me! *points

at [livejournal.com profile] kel_candelae * (Okay, so yes, I invited and welcomed the distraction, but... *smiles innocently*) And then of course I was at church much of Sunday. So why didn't I do it yesterday? Well, my poor little sis got her wisdom teeth taken out, so much of the day revolved around trying to make her feel better/entertain her. And today, I, er, slept 'til noon, actually. *sheepish* Well, I had about a week of not enough sleep to catch up on, and Nef really needed it, and since we share a room... ;)

So, although my squee may seem quite belated, I assure you it is none the less enthusiastic for it. I've been walking around for the last several days, singing under my breath and giggling at random moments.

POP awesomeness. :D )

Yaaays, my first batch of dragons has safely grown up and been duly named. *is very happy*

And now, being thoroughly addicted, I have more hatchlings and eggs! (Yes, I know, I was warned.)

Now that I know the new hatchlings' genders, I'll probably be thinking of proper names for them later today.

Yes, I do realize that I have a tendency to post either once every three weeks or so, or every other day. Um... sorry? :P

Not much to say, just felt like posting... because.

Dad was practicing the other day with the new bow we got him for his birthday. The result?

And a close-up:

Yep, split his own arrow. My dad: Robin Hood. *bg*

(Sorry about the lack of good cropping/sizing on the pics. My brain's still MIA, much to dear Neffie's amusement. She's quite enjoying my more... interesting commentary. The other day we were at a store, looking at a kinda cool lamp. My comment? "It's swirly... like a universe." Heh, meaning, of course, that the pattern on it was shaped rather like a spiral galaxy. *facepalm*)

Oh! And my little dragons should be hatching soon! 'Cept the last one, which is a bit behind.

So, the other night we were watching NCIS. Crime show, about navy cops, very definitely set in the real world. In the intro, it shows one of the characters looking into an iris scanner. What does Mom ask?

"Why are there lasers coming out of his eyes?"

*huge grin*

Yep, we have done well - the sci-fi mindset is now thoroughly entrenched. Believe me, considering our mom's very low interest in such things, it took some doing, too. ;D

In other news... Karate promotions were last night! Not too bad, considering the far-more-than-expected chunk of time we wound up taking off over Christmas/New Year's etc. due to some big snowstorms. And I'm a blue belt now! *bounces* Which means this is my eighth belt, with six more to go before black belt. That's... kinda hard to believe. Huh.

Bit of excitement this morning. It's garbage day, and some idiot vandal decided to go down our street and knock over and/or break all the garbage bins on our street. People. *sighs* Ours is totally useless now, so we're gonna have to get a new one. Still working out with the garbage company who's paying for what, and we had to have the police out here to take a look at things and make a report. Policeman was really nice and helpful, said in thirty years he's never seen anything quite like this around here. LOL, took him a while to get here, though, because turning a corner his car slid on the ice and went partway into the ditch. Ah, winter...

Anywho, back to work for me! Hehe, I think I may actually be a little ahead of schedule at the moment... because I sort of freaked out just a little yesterday, feeling like I was getting behind. Ahem. So yay! But now I have to contact tech support for my antivirus today, because I'm getting stupid errors over an important update. So, don't know how big a chunk of the day that's gonna take up. Bleh.
imbecamiel: (Spock Laughing Hysterically)
So, we rented Kung Fu Panda to watch last night, which I've wanted to do for some time, because it looked like fun and, well... martial arts and all, y'know? *bg*

imbecamiel: (Insane Mind)
Yes-I-know-I'm-talking-a-lot-but-I'm-in-a-really-happy-rambly-mood. *takes deep breath* And I've had way too much sugar today! He.

Making cookies with two preeschoolers and an eight-year-old is... hilarity. And messy, very messy. Especially when there's frosting involved. And sprinkles. Lots of sprinkles. And a whole lot of fun, if your attitude is just to shrug, let 'em make a mess, you can clean up later, and you're happy with cookies that have... lots of personality. *g*

Also? Have I mentioned that karate is so very awesome? :D Today's class was incredibly fun. (Possibly helped along a bit by the sugar high I was on, due to the large of tasting-of-little-ones'-artwork involved in the above incident.) Our teacher was in a really, really relaxed, silly mood, and everyone there today knew each other well, so we wound up doing a lot of laughing hysterically at each others' mistakes. ;) And then we spent a good part of the class doing a new exercise that was quite unexpectedly great.

We each took turns standing in the middle of the room with our eyes closed. Everyone else stood around in a circle. Our teacher would then randomly point to someone, who would come forward and grab hold of us - an arm, headlock, bear hug, hair, clothes, whatever they wanted. We wouldn't know what size person it was going to be, where they'd come from, or what they were going to do, so we had to just... react, figure out how to fight back and get away from them (heh, holding back so as not to really hurt each other, naturally).

It was rather scary and intimidating, yes (added to by the fact that by that point there were more than a dozen people standing outside the window, watching  - o.o), but I was surprised by how enjoyable and exhilirating it was, as well. I guess, in part, it just... gave me some more confidence that yes, I have been learning, I do know how to fight back, and if something were to happen, I would have a chance of effectively defending myself, even against someone bigger and stronger. Hehe, and yeah, it was particularly fun when Eric - Mr. Competitive, who is not going to let his sisters get off easy - decided to do a wrestling-type hold on my arms from behind me, and our teacher was very pleased with the way that I got away from him. ;D

'kay, enough karate rambling. To change the subject entirely - I got Lexie's Christmas pictures scanned in!

Just a couple, this time. ;) )

Hee.

Man. I am so totally wiped out. Also, kind of deliriously happy. Hehe.

Ashley (and Lexie!) wound up spending most of the day here, baking Christmas cookies and generally hanging out. And then when Evan came to pick them up, they all ended up staying to dinner, so Dad was able to spend some time with them too. It was so wonderful. Very exhausting, but so very fun. :D

I have no idea how Lexie manages to just keep getting more beautiful. And I can't believe she's nearly six months old already - ! She is... the most wonderful, perfect, adorable... Ehem. *sheepish smile* Yes, I know, y'all have heard the song and dance a dozen times before. But seriously. *happy sigh* 'M afraid you may have to suffer through another picture post sometime soon, here. ;)

I think I'm gonna fall asleep here now. Or maybe, I dunno... write a couple thousand words on one of my stories. Or something.

He.

I fail.

imbecamiel: (Shep - Got to be Kidding)
Yeah... apparently I'm a failure as a foster mom for birds.

Think I told most of you that a pair of our friends' parakeets started nesting. So, they asked if we'd be interested in taking them for a while, to help raise the babies and tame them when they hatch. Being the animal person around here, and the one who's the most read up on the subject, I've been kind of the head of operations. The parents are so absolutely sweet together, and they'd already laid two eggs - the usual number for parakeets is 3 to 5. Raising three or four little baby birds sounded like so much fun, and I was so excited. I was even more excited when the momma bird just kept laying... and laying... until she wound up with a total of seven eggs. It was so cute, seeing her try to spread such a small body over so many eggs - not to mention the way the male would just hover over her and sing to her.

And then suddenly she just stopped sitting on the eggs, threw them all out of the box, and punched holes in their sides. Needless to say, we were... upset. But then after a couple days she started laying again - a total of three this time. I wanted so badly to get things right this time around, was so careful not to let them get disturbed, and everything seemed to be finally going well. Until, after about a week of sitting on them, she did the same thing again.

I know there was likely nothing I could have done to change it, and she probably did it for a reason, knew they weren't viable anyway, something. But I still can't help wondering if there was something I did, or didn't do, or... *sighs* And I feel so sad over ten baby birds that never even had a chance at living. Maybe I'm being overdramatic, and I shouldn't get so upset over losing animals, but... I just feel like crying.

In other news... my cousin was hit by a semi while biking this morning. A hit-and-run, since the driver didn't stop at all, but with a truck that big it's possible they didn't realize what had happened. She's alive, and should recover well, but she's already had one surgery today, and needs another within the next few days. So... yeah. Since they're in Arizona, there's so little we can do for them, and news is kind of limited. Yet more unsaved family members I would very much appreciate prayers for - both her, and her mother, my dad's sister.

Heh, we've got so few relatives, I'm starting to suspect that they're all going to go into crisis at once...

In happier news, the meteorologists are saying we might get some snow today. That'd definitely be nice. *looks out at the rain hopefully*

Gotta get back to work.

imbecamiel: (Ronon: Gonna make sense?)
So... I'm back! Did ya miss me? *g* It's strange... On the one hand, it feels like we only just started out yesterday, but at the same time it feels like we've been gone months.

First, a brief summary:

States visited on the trip: 15

Countries: 2

Saw: So many beautiful places, I don't know how to begin to describe them. Even the bodies of water alone - the ocean, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan...

Books: Two short ones (Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and Writing Magic) completely read, and got a quite a way through two longer ones (Vulcan's Forge and God in the Dock). So, not very much, but it wasn't really a trip conducive to reading. All great books, though. :D Also listened to quite a number of books on tape - bit more on that in a minute. And bought a few books, too. Found a neat little out-of-print and used books store - it was in the process of being re-arranged, so the only section in any sort of real order was the Scifi section. Being the people of... eclectic tastes we are, Neffie and I bought several Star Trek books, The Iliad, and a neat old copy of The Merchant of Venice.

Writing: Finished the SGA story! *dances* It is the longest story I have ever written, by about... 11,500 words. *whistles* Coolness. o.o 33,700 words may not be that much ('specially next to certain prolific people I know) but, questions of quality aside, that is quite an accomplishment for me. :)

Art: Heh heh. Two finished pictures, and one rough sketch. But I actually got a ton accomplished. More on that in a bit.

Time had: Absolutely awesome. ;D

More details and vacation-related ramblings. )

imbecamiel: (Spock Laughing Hysterically)
So, we went to Taco Bell today, and they had an... interesting sign on the doors.

PLEASE BARE WITH US:

OUR A/C UNIT IS
NOT OPERABLE

Er... The Air Conditioner's not working, so let's all take off our clothes? Um, I'm really hot, yeah, but... not quite that hot, thankyouverymuch. :P And yes, of course I promptly cracked up. I'm far too amused by these things...

And then we spent the afternoon visiting Ashley and Lexie, so -

Pictures!
