Yeah, lots going on.

Man, there have been so many things over the last week or so that I've wanted to post about, and others' posts I've wanted to comment on. There's been so much going on, however, that I haven't had the time to actually do so. Sorry for my scarce presence on the internets of late. I keep typing up part of a post, and then not having time to finish... So I guess this is gonna be a bit of a mixed collection of everything that's been going on.
Been working on the editing for TEACH a lot, of course. They weren't able to send me all the articles at the beginning, so I wound up getting a lot one at a time right toward the end. So kinda hectic, but manageable this time, since she didn't object to my extending the deadline a bit.
My grandma's also been here for the last week (well, step-grandma, technically, my grandpa re-married in his 70s), so when I haven't been editing I've pretty much been spending time with her.
Quite randomly, a few weeks ago Mom was going through some of Grandma's things that were given to us after she died. (This would be my dad's mom.... ergh, I hate to refer to her as my "real grandma" or my grandpa's first wife, but trying to clarify family relationships can get so complicated sometimes.) We're finding some really interesting things as we go through all of her papers. For instance, we've discovered that when she died she was in the process of writing a devotional book - I believe it's pretty much complete. So we're talking about Mom gathering it together and typing it into the computer so I can edit it, and maybe we can publish it as an e-book. LOL, and we're also funding some really fun stuff as well. Such as this:

He. :D Hope it's at least kinda visible - at any rate, it's a "certificate of incompetence" awarded for "particularly egregious stupidity". It wasn't filled out to her, 'course, she had a couple spare copies left for handing out. ;)
And... before Grandma got here, we finally broke down and watched the last of season 10 of SG-1, and then the new movie, The Ark of Truth. *bounces and squees in fannish delight* But... now it's all done. *cries* But... there's another movie coming out on the 28th. Yays! And at least SGA is still going. Can't wait until the 8th when we can get season 4!
And... we went to see WALL-E. Aww... So. Very. Cute. :D One of the little girls sitting in our row had to be taken out by her parents near the end, though, because she was crying so hard when it looked like WALL-E had died. I was torn between amusement and feeling really bad for the poor girl... When we came out at the end, and she was still crying, of course, I went over to reassure her that he was alive, and everything turned out okay in the end. She looked quite relieved. ;) Really, though, as Nef and I talked about afterward, she's likely to be a nice addition to the world of fandom when she gets older, if she gets so into stories and attached to her heroes now. Her disadvantage (and, depending on how you look at it, rather advantage as well) now is that she's not old enough, experienced enough, and perhaps just a touch cynical enough, to know about genres, and stock plot twists, and the fact that there are certain things that just are not done in certain kinds of children's cartoon movies. :) At any rate - fun movie, and I'd definitely recommend it if you feel like watching something just cute - with robots, in space!
And my grandma's taste in movies and TV series is now officially completely beyond my comprehension or prediction. I love her dearly, but... *shakes head in bewilderment*
She's said that she doesn't like stories that aren't "real", so to speak (that is, not that they necessarily have to be based on a true story, but they usually have to be conceivably realistic). Thus, she absolutely loathed National Treasure 2. Yet... she really liked Pirates of the Caribbean. She also doesn't like violent, gory movies. Thus, she very much disliked Lord of the Rings. But... she wanted to go see Sweeny Todd - yes, knowing what it was about.
So... We have recently gotten into NCIS. We rarely watch anything regularly on TV (Numb3rs has been our only show for some time), but Dad meets with a man on Tuesday nights to kind of mentor/disciple him. We were watching a comedy show while he was gone for a while, but then Dancing with the Stars took its place, NCIS was on at the same time, we decided to try it... Like it very much. ;D So anyway, we were talking about whether we'd watch it, with Grandma here, and decided to try it. So then we mentioned it to her, and... Turns out she loves it. She's been watching it (not always, but often) for years. Could even be considered rather... fannish the way she talked about it ("...and then Gibbs will come into the room and Abby with come over and hug him, and he'll just almost smile..."). We were discussing season finales, since she didn't get to see this year's one, and she was telling us about last year's, and when we told her that the director died in this one she said, "Oh, good!" (hee!). Nef and I kept making subtle o.O faces at each other. Good grief, and here I was almost sure she'd loathe the show. I don't think I'll ever figure her out...
But anyway, we've been enjoying having her here. Went for a drive yesterday and failed to go to museums... 'cause everything was closed on the Fourth, of course, even the ones that Mom was sure would be open, and the one with the "Open now!" sign out front. But we did get to see the site where they found the Kensington Rune Stone, and listened to some books on tape while we drove, so still fun. And we stopped at an antiques store, and I found an awesome, really old hardcover copy of a version of Robin Hood that I've never seen before. *loves old books*
And then... we just found out today that my great-aunt Kaya has breast cancer. She'll be 90 in just a couple months, and I was just thinking when we visited her a couple of weeks ago that it's hard to imagine her ever dying. She's still quite active, still drawing and painting, and her mind's just as sharp as ever. Talking with her, the only indication of advancing age you'd get is that her hearing's not quite so good as it used to be, and she's recently had to give up her wood-carving because of arthritis. She's getting treatment for the cancer, and is going to be having a mastectomy soon, but at her age... I just don't know what the prognosis is like yet, but it's not likely to be very good. Your prayers for her would be very much appreciated.

Date: 2008-07-06 12:16 am (UTC)The little girl at WALL-E is so me as a child. Still me, actually. Still sob like a baby at movies. It's a bit embarrassing for me and for my friends.
Other people: "Is she okay?"
My friends: "Yeah, she just does that at movies. It's fine."
Me: *sobs*
Sorry about your great aunt Kaya. She sounds like a rare and special woman!

Date: 2008-07-08 03:58 am (UTC)Great-Aunt Kaya is indeed an incredible woman. And of our extended family, she's always been the most excited and encouraging of whatever artistic inclinations Nef and I have pursued - even when our grandpa was dead-set against our even considering being artists (which was mostly because of our aunt, not great-aunt, Kay whose eccentricity is a whole 'nother story...).

Date: 2008-07-06 12:44 am (UTC)Wheee, new SGA! I'm a tad upset, because it looks like I'll have to wait until August before I'm actually able to buy the new season. *sigh* My funds are low. Although, I suspect my mom might cave and buy it before I do. It's lovely when the whole family can be fannish together.... :D
We're going to see WALL-E on Monday, which looks So. Totally. Cute. Aww, and the poor little girl! It's always sweet though when a kid gets that involved in characters though. Yes, I bet she'll turn out to be quite a fan, one day. :D (LOL, I bawled through a lot of things when I was little, and my mom was constantly having to tell me the ends to things, so I could actually stick through teh misery until the end.... :D )
*giggles at your grandma's fannishness* (Oh, that's so funny, that she was equally as pleased as you were to have the director dead.... :D) Isn't it odd, when people you'd least expect to like something end up loving it? I had a similar reaction over Christmas upon discovering that my aunt--my mom's sister--loves the original series of Star Trek. And she's so much like my mom, who hates the original series...it kind of shocked me. I'm also still surprised that my mom liked LotR as much as she did, and, not to mention, how much she likes SGA, and particularly Rodney.... O.o I mean, she will bring it up to talk about, without us trying to initiate it! LOL. Yay for fannishness.
I'm so sorry to hear about your great-aunt.... :( I will definitely be praying.
(BTW...it doesn't look like I'll have a review on your story by tonight. :-/ I will get on it first thing on Monday!)

Date: 2008-07-07 05:41 pm (UTC)Oh no! Having to wait until August to to get the new season... :( Here's hoping your Mom gets impatient before then! LOL, it is so much fun when the whole family gets fannish, isn't it? Usually, even when the rest of the family likes something, it's only Nef and me who get really truly fannish about it. So when everyone gets really into something, and both "gets" and makes random references to it... *sighs happily*
He, I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of WALL-E! It is so fun, sometimes, as an adult (huh, guess I am an adult, aren't I...LOL, takes me rather off-guard every time I think of it.) to watch children's movies and just enjoy the fun, uncomplicated cuteness of it. ;D Not to mention the way the filmmakers have taken to including some subtle humor and references that children won't get but adults can enjoy (and yet, thankfully, often not actually "adult" humor).
LOL, it was so funny when she had that reaction to the director's death! It is just strange, isn't it, how the most unexpected people can like things? I mean, of course we all have our own rather quirky and apparently uncharacteristic likes and dislikes, I know I've certainly surprised a few people with some things, but there's unexpected and then there's... O.O Who likes what now? *g* People sure are interesting, and it's wonderful fun to suddenly find something in common with someone you'd never have predicted. :D
Thanks so much for your prayers, gwathel. *hugs*
(And quite all right - I understand, and I'll be looking forward to it whenever you're able to get to it. :) )

It reminds me of a game I used to play as a kid-- "Jim Something likes lemons, but doesn't like grapefruit. He likes stairs, but not ladders"--no offense to your grandmother, of course.
Sounds like your summer is going well so far--aside from the little things. You've been on my prayer list for some time now, and I haven't taken you off. My main problem is remembering everyone...
Ciao for now.
